Creating Your Weight Loss Plan

Want to create your own weight loss plan? If you look over the numerous ideas proposed in our fad diet series, it’s pretty clear that there’s no single essential technique to losing weight, so why not make your own? Here are some tips to help you make a weight los

Decide on Your Goals

How much weight do you want to lose? If you’re looking to drop ten pounds or less or if you just want to stop weight gain, look at our 10 Ways to Lose Weight and see if there are any easy changes you can make to your lifestyle that will make a difference.

If you have more dramatic goals, try going to the USDA’s ChooseMyPlate.gov, which can help you design a diet plan to achieve your goals.

Pick Foods You Like

If you go to ChooseMyPlate.gov, you’ll notice that the recommendations are very broad, just telling you how much grains, vegetables, dairy, etc. to eat on a daily basis. It doesn’t tell you what these should be. You have almost complete freedom to fill in the categories with food you like. Consider the difference between two successful diet plans, such as the Atkins Diet or the Mediterranean diet. The key is portion control.

And don’t forget to build in treats. People who go on stricter diets are less likely to lose weight.

Add Exercise You Like

Again, any increase in exercise will result in weight loss over time—if you do it. Pick things you enjoy doing. Try doing them with people you enjoy doing things with. You will get better and faster results if you mix up your exercise with different types, including aerobic exercise and strength training.

Stick to It

On your custom weight loss plan, you don’t know how much weight you’re likely to lose or how quickly, but you’ll see results. If you’re not seeing the results you want, increase your exercise or decrease your portions.
