How to Boost Your Metabolism

There are two ways to achieve a calorie deficit that will lead to weight loss. You can either decrease your intake or increase the amount of calories you burn. Doing both leads to a much better result. If you’re already planning a diet, here are some tips for boost metabolism so your body burns more calories throughout the day.

boost metabolism

High-Intensity Bursts

If you’re already exercising, you can increase the impact on your metabolism by putting in a few short bursts of higher-intensity. Run, walk, or pedal faster for about 30 seconds, then go back to your normal pace. These short bursts boost metabolism more than moderate exercise, and the benefits last for hours after your routine ends.

Build Muscle

Building muscle helps your body burn more calories even when resting. All that muscle needs energy just to stay alive, so it helps you consume more energy even when you’re not exercising.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep deprivation can slow down your metabolism. Try to get about eight hours of sleep a night. For more information, see Sleep and Weight Loss.

Eat Throughout the Day

Eating less at a time but more frequently keeps your body’s fires stoked for burning those calories, not storing them. But make sure you’re eating the right things when you snack. Get balanced mini-meals with some fruit or veggie, some proteins, and some whole grains.

Don’t Starve

Speaking of keeping your body from storing fats, starvation diets signal your body to go into a preservation mode where it tries to store as much energy as possible. Your metabolism goes down and you may actually be gaining fat and losing muscle.

Get Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids can improve your body’s response to the hormone leptin, which influences how quickly your body burns fat.

Don’t Get Comfortable

One of the main things your body uses energy for is thermoregulation. If you’re a little chilly, your body needs to burn more calories to maintain its temperature. And as a bonus, you’re less likely to snack if you’re not at a comfortable temperature.

Move It to Lose It

Your metabolism responds to your daily level of activity, so anything you can do to increase your activity will have the benefit not only of burning the immediate calories, but also stimulate your body to burn more calories in general. Just getting a little bit of extra activity during the course of your day–anything from parking your car further away to get up for a quick “victory lap” around the office between tasks—can help.
